  10. IN THE BEGINNING...
  11.  
  12.                  Afton Mountain CC started life as a scorecard given to me 
  13.                  out of the bag of my future brother-in-law (thanks, Alan!) 
  14.                  The card was from the University of Virginia golf course,
  15.                  Birdwood. I was particularly taken with the 2nd and 6th
  16.                  holes and thought this might make a great JNSE course. The
  17.                  problem was that I'd never seen the course and had no
  18.                  immediate hope of getting to it...
  19.  
  20.                  My solution to this problem was to get a copy of the
  21.                  "Charlottesville, West" USGS topographic map and locate the
  22.                  course from there. With map in hand, I was able to digitize
  23.                  the gross contours of the course terrain. Having spent some
  24.                  time in the C-ville area, I was basically familiar with the
  25.                  "look" and was able to come up with a suitable background.
  26.  
  27.                  The course itself came together rather quickly, but having
  28.                  no "on the ground" knowledge of how the course played, I
  29.                  didn't feel comfortable releasing this as a non-fiction
  30.                  work. Changing the names to protect the innocent seemed the
  31.                  best course of action. {g}

  33. ABOUT THE COURSE
  34.  
  35.                  Afton Mountain has some fairly significant changes in
  36.                  elevation... this is a bit of a departure for me since most
  37.                  of my courses tend to be coastal in nature, and thus don't
  38.                  vary much vertically. The nature of the course makes for
  39.                  some approach shots that really test the players ability to
  40.                  select the proper club and shot.
  41.  
  42.                  Another interesting aspect of the course if that the back
  43.                  plays significantly longer than the front. Score as well as
  44.                  you can going out, 'cause it's tough to make up ground
  45.                  coming in to the house!
  46.  
  47.                  Observant players of my previous courses will note that I've
  48.                  done away with fringe around the green on most holes. I
  49.                  think this adds a level of difficulty to the course that
  50.                  might not otherwise be there. Hopefully, scores on AM will
  51.                  bear this out, but in any event, I think it makes a nice
  52.                  change of pace for my work...

  54. A NOTE TO TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS
  55.  
  56.                  Afton Mountain CC is not a course that favors dry conditions!
  57.                  I felt that I'd have to compromise the elevation work too
  58.                  much to compensate for JNSE's "less than accurate" portrayal
  59.                  of those conditions. If you run a tournament that features
  60.                  dry conditions, the wrath of your players should be directed
  61.                  at you and not the designer... {g}

  65.                  I hope you enjoy your round(s) at Afton Mountain. It's a fun
  66.                  round of electronic golf. Now that this one's out the door,
  67.                  I can concentrate on Crooked Stick and my fictional links-
  68.                  style work... not necessarily in that order. {g}

  79.                  don't judge my rendition too harshly... it's hard to be
  80.                  accurate when you're working from a scorecard and a topo
  81.                  map! Let's just call it artistic license and leave it at
